Maternity care
The maternity nurse helps you during the first days after your baby is born. For example, they will help you with feeding and taking care of your baby. The maternity nurse also monitors your own recovery and gives you tips. You can easily apply for maternity care with your chosen maternity care organisation.
Important: You do not have to report your pregnancy to VGZ.
Arrange your own maternity care in time
It's important to apply for maternity care no later than the 16th week of your pregnancy. How do you do this?
- You can easily find a maternity care organisation in our Care Finder using your postal code or place of residence. The organisations in the Care Finder have a contract with us. Please note that the Care Finder is only available in Dutch. The Dutch word for Maternity Care is 'Kraamzorg'. You can enter this in the first field.
- Have you found a maternity care organisation? Then you can contact them and arrange the application from their website. The link is in the Care Finder. You can also contact them by phone.
- The maternity care organisation takes care of everything else and also sends us the invoice.

Shortage of maternity nurses
In the Netherlands there is a national shortage of maternity nurses. As a result, you may receive less maternity care or in a different way than you expected. It is important that you receive the care you need. Therefore, consult with your maternity care organisation in time about the possibilities. It’s also recommended to try to get some more help from family and friends.

Tip: also apply for your maternity package
The maternity package includes everything you need during the birth. It is helpful at home or when you return from a hospital. Apply for your maternity package before the 5th month of your pregnancy. You'll then receive it at home by the 7th month of your pregnancy at the latest.You can apply for the maternity package here.
This website is only available in Dutch. You'll be asked for your customer number. You can find this in the VGZ app under My details. If you don't have supplementary insurance then you can purchase the package at your own expense. If you have supplementary insurance, VGZ will pay for your maternity package.
Reimbursements
If you only have standard insurance, an extra contribution applies for maternity care. You can see what that contribution is here (in Dutch).
