Which costs are not covered by your health insurance?

Your excess

Your excess consists of the annual out-of-pocket costs before your health insurance takes over. The mandatory excess is determined by the government each year and is currently € 385. You’ll pay these costs if you use healthcare that falls under your basic insurance package, such as drawing blood, a visit to the hospital or transport by ambulance.

Your personal contribution

Some types of healthcare are not covered by your health insurance. You’ll have to pay for (part of) these yourself. Examples are medication or medical devices, such as prescription glasses. Always check your insurance package to find out which costs are your own responsibility.

Uncontracted healthcare providers

You decide which healthcare provider you go to. It’s wise to check if the healthcare provider you have in mind is contracted by VGZ. If a healthcare provider doesn’t have a contract with VGZ, you may have to pay for (part of) the treatment yourself.

Treatments not included in your insurance package

Always check the coverage of your insurance package. Not all treatments are automatically reimbursed. For example, if you go to an orthodontist and want (part of) your costs to be reimbursed, it’s important to have the right supplementary insurance. Orthodontist treatments are not included in the basic insurance package.

Treatments that exceed your maximum budget

For some types of healthcare, such as alternative medicine, you may have an annual budget. If this budget runs out, any additional costs are out-of-pocket. Your budget can also consist of a maximum number of treatments. For example if you go to a physical therapist. In other cases, you may only be allowed a maximum budget per treatment.

Your first premium payment

When and how you pay your first premium depends on the payment method you selected when you signed up for our health insurance. You can check your preferences in the VGZ app.

Direct debit

If you chose the payment method direct debit, we’ll send you a notification before your very first payment. From that point on, we’ll always collect your premium on the 27th of each month. This will happen automatically. You won’t receive any more notifications after your first direct debit payment.

Payment via iDeal

Did you select payment via iDeal? Then we’ll send you an email that includes the amount of your premium and a payment link. To pay your premium, all you need to do is click on the secure link.
